How to organize your kids’ space in quarantine

Summer break started way earlier this year. No school, camp, or activities to drop your kids to. Everyone is stuck at home and you may already be running out of ideas on how to make it work. Does your living room feel like a constant playground these days?

Use these interior design tips to organize your kids’ space, declutter their room and keep some sanity in the house. As we are asked to live closer than ever to each other, we need to make sure everyone can feel at peace when at home during this difficult time.

Consider these three areas when decorating your kids’ space and make sure to optimize your decoration to study, sleep & play.

STUDY

Your kids will have to learn to focus in a different environment in the next few months. It is already hard in normal times, expect it to be more challenging with everything going on.

–        Have a desk available for them

Make it easier by having a place dedicated to homeschooling so they can have structure when learning at home. If it doesn’t fit in their room, make some space in the common area and make it clear to them and everyone else in the family that this is their space to study.

–        Use natural light

Choose a space for your kids desk that is close by natural light. That will keep them energized and productive when doing homework.

–        Take advantage of unused space for storage

Help your kids keep all their school supplies organized by utilizing bookshelves that aren’t currently used or clearing some space so your kids know exactly how to keep their stuff tidy.

In their room, make the best use of heights by adding shelves above their desk.

Also make use of space under the bed using custom-made boxes so no room is being lost and it is easy to push it in and out.

Storage space will help your kids feel organized and will increase their focus while they are studying at their desk.

–        Add plants

We usually don’t think of adding plants to a kid’s room but it has energizing advantages that can benefit your kid when being homeschooled. Put a small plant on the desk or a bigger one in the corner of their room. You can also have fun with the pots to add colors to the room.

SLEEP

Having a separation between the sleeping and studying space will help your child’s brain to make the differentiation for when it is time to focus and when it is time to unwind. This can be done by using a different color on the wall for the “study area” versus the “sleeping area” or add a clearer separation with curtains or panel dividers for example.

PLAY

–        Keep room for your kids to move

Make the design enjoyable for your kids so they can identify with their room and don’t pack their room too much. You want to keep space for them to move around and be creative. Let them have a say in the design of their room. Especially in times like today, you want to make sure they feel comfortable in their room where they will be spending more time than they are used to.

–        Keep it flexible

–        Kids change their mind often. Choose flexible decors by using removable wallpapers for example that are easy to peel off and switch. Don’t go all in with a princess bed that might not be liked in a few months. Instead we recommend that you choose heavy simple furniture and have fun with the colors, smaller decorations, rug, pillows, curtains. Let your kids express themselves so the room can reflect their personality.
